Definition
Employees in this class are under close to general supervision. Work performed in assisting in the installation and maintenance of locks and related hardware and performing related work as required.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Disassembles and reassembles cylinders.
Cuts keys to fit a particular combination of tumblers.
Replaces tumblers to fit a particular key.
Inspects and replaces broken or worn parts in locks and related equipment.
Installs and adjusts door closers.
Picks locks.
Installs locks.
Performs other work as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques of installing, repairing, and maintaining locks and related hardware.
Knowledge of locks and locking systems.
Knowledge of the use of common hand tools, machine tools, and tools common to the locksmith trade.
Ability to key and re-key locks to standard and master ring cylinders.
Ability to cut keys to fit a particular combination of tumblers.
Ability to pick locks.
Ability to use required tools and equipment.
Ability to evaluate situations and make decisions.
Ability to follow instructions of a locksmith.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Graduation from a standard high school. Some experience in assisting a locksmith.
