Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in setting up and operating machine tools, fitting and assembling metal parts to repair, rebuild, modify, and construct equipment and performing related work as required.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Studies specifications of part to be replaced and plans sequence of operations.
Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points to lay out stock for machining.
Sets up and operates lathe, milling machine, shaper, or grinder to machine parts to specifications and verifies conformance of part to specifications.
Verifies dimensions and alignment with measuring instruments such as micrometer, height gauges, and gauge blocks.
Uses electric and pneumatic power tools for sawing, drilling, and grinding.
Performs electric and acetylene welding.
Performs preventive maintenance tasks such as cleaning, lubricating, and adjusting of shop equipment.
Performs other work as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of mechanics as related to machine shop work.
Knowledge of machine mathematics.
Knowledge of metal properties.
Knowledge of lay-out machining procedures.
Knowledge of the use, care, and maintenance of required tools and equipment, both specialized and common.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
Ability to study specifications such as blueprints, sketches, or descriptions of part to be made and plan sequence of operation.
Ability to measure, mark, and scribe dimensions in reference points and lay out stock for machining.
Ability to make arithmetic calculations rapidly and accurately.
Ability to use and operate tools and equipment.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Completion of a standard machinist apprenticeship.
