Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in routine medical laboratory testing to obtain data for use by physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of illness and performing related work as required.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Performs qualitative and quantitative chemical, microscopic, bacteriologic, and other medical laboratory analysis.
Records results for physician's review.
Operates certain specialized analytical instruments and equipment.
Obtains specimens from patients as required using established techniques.
Prepares chemicals, reagents, and solutions.
Prepares slides for microscopic analysis as required.
Cleans and maintains standard laboratory equipment.
Performs other work as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of the principles and practices of routine medical laboratory testing procedures and recording of results.
Knowledge of the use of required instruments and equipment, chemicals, reagents and solutions.
Knowledge of slide preparation.
Ability to use necessary instruments and techniques required in routine laboratory testing.
Ability to properly record results.
Ability to obtain specimens using established techniques.
Ability to prepare slides.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Graduation from a standard high school. Experience in medical laboratory analysis work.
