Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in operating milk processing equipment and performing related work as required.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Picks up unprocessed milk from farm, delivers milk to processing site, connects hoses and pumps milk from tank truck to storage tank.
Assembles fittings, valves, bowls, plates, disks, and other parts to equipment with wrench to prepare for operation.
Turns valves to pump sterilizing solution and rinse water through pipes and equipment.
Starts pumps and equipment, observes temperature and pressure gauges, and opens valves on continuous flow equipment to force milk through homogenizer to produce specified emulsion.
Turns valves to admit steam and water into pipes to pasteurize milk and to circulate refrigerant through coils to cool milk.
Observes pressure and temperature gauges and records specific time, temperature, pressure, and volume readings.
Delivers processed milk to on campus location.
Cleans and performs routine maintenance on equipment.
Performs other work as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of the sanitary procedures involved in processing milk.
Knowledge of the operations of milk processing equipment.
Knowledge of the proper pressures, temperatures, and cooking and cooling involved in milk processing.
Knowledge of preventive and routine maintenance required on milk processing equipment and machinery.
Knowledge of the operation of tank truck and delivery vehicle.
Ability to use and operate tools, equipment and machinery used in processing milk.
Ability to perform preventative and routine maintenance on equipment and machinery.
Ability to maintain required standards of sanitation.
Ability to operate tank truck and delivery vehicle.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Graduation from a standard high school. Experience in milk processing. Possession of a health card issued by the local county health department. Possession of a valid Tennessee Operator License as issued by the Tennessee Department of Safety.
