Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in preparing and painting buildings, equipment, furniture and various other surfaces; supervising painters of lower classifications, and performing related work as required.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Performs skilled painting on campus properties.
Determines type and kind of materials needed, time allowance between coats and number of coats required, adequacy of surface preparation, and areas to be painted.
Thins material to proper consistency and mixes and matches paints to surfaces being painted.
Supervises and assigns work to painters of a lower classification.
Performs other work as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of the principles, practices and methods of painting.
Knowledge of paints, colors and mixing of colors.
Knowledge of surface preparation, primers, sealers, undercoats and thinners.
Knowledge of the equipment used in painting.
Knowledge of the safety precautions to be used when working with necessary equipment.
Knowledge of the principles and methods of supervision.
Ability to paint evenly, consistently and efficiently.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to instruct and supervise other painters of lower classification.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Completion of the tenth grade. Progressively responsible experience in painting at the journeyman level.
