Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in repairing systems and equipment common to the plumber's trade. Performs other duties as assigned.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Plans best way from several alternative ways to accomplish job.
Reads work orders and blueprints.
Selects best method for temporary, emergency repairs.
Requisitions parts and supplies.
Repairs discrepancies on sewer, water and gas systems.
Operates specialized equipment and hand tools common to the plumber's trade.
Solders pipe and pours lead to seal cast iron pipe.
Operates jack hammer to break up concrete slab.
Drives truck.
Installs special purpose system (such as high pressure air, water filtration, etc.).
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Ability to troubleshoot plumbing problems.
Ability to install and repair plumbing fixtures.
Skill in the use of tools and equipment common to the plumbing trade.
Ability to follow written instructions.
Ability to act as group leader for employees performing routing tasks.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints and drawings.
Ability to follow written instructions.
Ability to explain and demonstrate methods and procedures.
Ability to schedule and assign work of others.
Ability to estimate time required for job completion.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Completion of apprenticeship program for plumbers; OR vocational school certificate in plumbing; plus one and one half years on-the-job training; OR four years on-the-job training.
