Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in radiation surveys, and in compliance with regulatory agencies. Performs other duties as assigned.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Performs surveys of reactor facilities and of radioactive materials.
Tests for leakage and contamination of sealed sources.
Monitors personnel exposures.
Maintains current radioactive materials inventory.
Determines, evaluates, and maintains records of individual radiation exposures.
Maintains current licenses.
Administers the University Radiation Safety Program.
Reports "reportable occurrences" to appropriate regulatory agency.
Oversees corrective action taken by departments to correct non-compliance revealed by inspections.
Responds to emergency involving radiation or radioactivity and conducts investigations.
Conducts training sessions.
Assists faculty in matters concerned with radiation or radioactive materials.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Ability to maintain records.
Knowledge of radiation safety regulations.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to plan and organize work.
Ability to perform surveys concerning reactor facilities personnel exposure and related studies.
Administrative ability.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. High school graduate or equivalent; plus three years experience and/or related training in working with radioactive materials and/or nuclear reactors.
