Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in carrying out a variety of intricate and complex technical duties involved in conducting research oriented experiments; making technical determinations in research projects and performing related work as required.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Performs a wide variety of intricate and complex technical duties of a physical, biological or chemical nature in order to obtain data in support of research oriented activities.
Records results of research and prepares detailed graphs, reports, or other procedures relating to observations and/or reactions.
Observes and measures phenomena in experiments with responsibility for notifying supervisor of deviations from projected or expected results.
Maintains responsibility for proper laboratory stock, equipment and supplies.
Provides guidance of a technical nature to designated employees.
Assumes responsibility for operation or proper set up of laboratory research oriented equipment to be utilized for specific experiments.
Performs other work as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Broad knowledge of basic laboratory methodology.
Knowledge of business English and arithmetic.
Ability to perform a wide variety of informational research projects.
Ability to gather, compile and properly record data.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees.
Demonstrated ability with laboratory research equipment such as spectrometers, microscopes, scintillation counters, autoclaves, and sonicators.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a General Education Development Test Certificate including or supplemented by courses in statistics and mathematics. Completion of a two year course of instruction leading to a degree or certificate in Medical Technology or related area from an accredited technology program or equivalent experience required. Four years of laboratory experience desired.
