Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in safety inspections and the investigating of accidents. Performs other duties as assigned.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Performs safety and/or fire inspections of buildings, grounds, and equipment.
Checks for violations of safety codes and standards.
Assists fire department employees by locating buildings or equipment and providing escort.
Contacts work control to make correction for unsafe items.
Interprets and explains policies and regulations.
Studies and reviews accident reports.
May remove, recharge or replace fire extinguishers.
Maintains records and logs.
Conducts training sessions and gives advice on safety measures.
Occasionally attends safety committee meetings.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of safety codes and standards (OSHA, NFC, BOCA, STANDARD, EPA, etc.)
Ability to read blueprints and specifications.
Ability to maintain records.
Ability to perform safety inspections.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Knowledge of proper testing for safety hazards.
Ability to plan and organize work.
Ability to investigate accidents.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Two years of college, and a minimum of two years experience in a safety related area PLUS a working knowledge of fire, life, safety and OSHA codes.
