Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in analyzing blood, tissues and fluids from humans and/or animals to detect and diagnose disease and other abnormalities; and performing related work as required.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Prepares sections of body tissue (slides) for examination by a pathologist.
Prepares tissue specimens of human and animal origin for diagnostic, research or teaching purposes.
Examines slides under microscope to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements.
Processes sections of body tissue by fixation, dehydration, embedding, sectioning, decalcification, microincineration, mounting and routine and special staining.
Prepares reagents, stains and chemical solutions.
Performs analysis of prepared specimens according to procedures.
Operates and maintains a variety of basic and computerized laboratory equipment.
May supervise laboratory personnel.
Maintains inventory of materials, supplies and chemicals.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of cutting, staining and mounting techniques for tissue specimens.
Knowledge of laboratory licensing laws and regulations.
Knowledge of the use of reagents, stains, and chemical solutions.
Knowledge of specimen analysis and routine laboratory experiments.
Knowledge of the use of equipment used for histologic laboratory procedures.
Ability to efficiently use microtome to section prepared tissue.
Ability to correctly use reagents, stains and chemical solutions.
Ability to maintain an adequate inventory of materials, supplies and chemicals.
Ability to maintain an effective working relationship with students and other employees.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Graduation from a standard high school. ASCP (American Society of Clinical Pathologists) registry certified in histology. Experience in a pathology/cytology laboratory.
