Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in organizing and scheduling the work of employees in Steam and Chiller Plant, and operating steam plant during emergencies. Performs other duties as assigned.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Plans and schedules work shifts, daily workload, and periodic maintenance schedule.
Plans for varying steam demands depending upon weather, season, etc.
Recommends operating budget for upcoming year.
Directly supervises steam and chiller operators.
Inspects repairs on system before pressurizing.
Confers with insurance or city inspectors.
Assures compliance with safety standards.
Operates a steam plant during emergencies and performs actual maintenance as necessary.
Investigates and documents employee grievances in his area.
Drives truck or car.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Ability to plan and supervise steam and chiller plant activities.
Ability to inspect work for completeness and quality.
Ability to motivate employee work performance.
Ability to perform administrative activities.
Ability to operate machines and tools of the steam/chiller trade.
Knowledge of steam and chiller safety standards.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. High school graduate or equivalent; vocational school certificate or completion of apprenticeship in steam and chiller operation; plus two years steam and chiller experience. Supervisory experience preferred. Must possess valid operator's license.
