Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in following procedures in operating and/or supervising others operating machinery in setting type for printing purposes. Supervising and/or operating an offset press, and performing related work as required.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Determines or supervises others in determining type style, type size, layout, taps, etc. for the printing job to be done.
Sets type, often preparing a paste-up sheet.
Sets headlines or titles.
Approves completed paste-up for printing.
Requisitions supplies and materials.
Performs other work as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of the technical, mechanical, and procedural aspects involved in typesetting.
Knowledge of the use and operation of required tools and equipment.
Knowledge of mathematics as it relates to printing.
Knowledge of supplies and materials used.
Knowledge of the principles and methods of supervision.
Ability to determine type style, size, layout, etc.
Ability to set type using one or more of various methods.
Ability to operate printing equipment and instruct others in its operation.
Ability to evaluate situations and make decisions.
Ability to operate and perform routine maintenance on tools and equipment.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Graduation from a standard high school. Experience in the printing profession, including the operation of typesetting and printing equipment.
