Definition
Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in executing skilled welding repairs and metal fabrication and performing related work as required.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Accomplishes all welding repairs and metal fabrication for the university, using arc, heli-arc, and acetylene welding methods on materials such as steel, stainless steel, aluminum, magnesium, and copper alloys.
Performs layout work, cuts, forms, drills, and fits metal prior to welding.
Reads and interprets prints and drawings, takes measurements, verifies dimensions, estimates and selects materials for the work to be accomplished.
Transports equipment, tools, and materials to and from the work site.
Performs periodic maintenance on welding and metal working machines and equipment.
Performs other work as assigned.
Required Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of the methods, materials and terminology of the welding trade.
Knowledge of the proper temperatures for tempering metals.
Knowledge of arc and oxy-acetylene welding methods.
Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Ability to operate oxy-acetylene welding equipment.
Ability to read blueprints for fabrications.
Ability to operate necessary motor equipment.
Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees.
Recommended Qualifications
Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Completion of a standard apprenticeship in the welding trade. Considerable experience in welding.
