Ready to help athletes achieve peak performance? Pursue your M.S. in Sport Science and Coach Education at East Tennessee State University. Our program provides hands-on education for those who want to work as a sport scientist and coach. 

You’ll work closely with athletes to monitor their progress and find ways to make them perform better. You’ll find ways to lower incidents of sports injuries through research and education. 

The master’s program is integrated with the ETSU Center of Excellence for Sport Science and Coach Education (CESSCE). Through this partnership, you will have the opportunity to be involved in clinics for coaches, continuing education programs, and activities that permeate the sports community.

The research and work you’ll perform in this program will help you impact the quality of life of athletes in our region and beyond.

We also offer a 100% online option for students who are not able to attend on campus.

Application Requirements

  • Admission Requirements and Application Instructions
    1. An undergraduate degree in physical education, exercise science, or closely related field; 
    2. 3.0 cumulative undergraduate grade point average on a 4.0 scale; international applicants should consult the ETSU Graduate Catalog for more specific information on requirements for countries using different grading scales; 
    3. Official scores on the general portion of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE); 
    4. Resume and contact information for at least three letters of recommendation.
    5. Essay explaining goals, career expectations, and reasons for desiring to study in sport science and coach education at ETSU.

    Note: The Applied Sport Science Concentration only admits students for the fall. The application deadline is May 1 for fall admission.

  • Financial Assistance

    Various forms of financial assistance are available through the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships. In addition, Tuition Scholarships are available in the Department of Exercise Science. Other opportunities may be available in campus recreation, student activities, and other campus areas. 

    Application materials for Graduate Assistantship and Tuition Scholarship positions may be obtained from the Program Coordinator.

  • Concentrations

    The M.S. degree at ETSU offers two concentrations that add to the mission of improving sport science and coach education.  

    • The Applied Sport Science Concentration is designed to prepare students for positions in sport science, coaching, strength and conditioning, and advanced graduate study. The curriculum employs both traditional classroom lectures and assigning students to work with sports teams as sports scientists/strength and conditioning specialists. 
       
    • The Strength and Conditioning Concentration is offered exclusively online and caters to students who are working with or have a desire to work with competitive athletes at the high school, college, professional, and elite levels. Students will gain an understanding of coaching issues, the physiology of training and conditioning, and fatigue management. To learn more, visit our online program page.
