Fall Concerts 2013

JOHNSON CITY (August 28, 2013) – East Tennessee State University’s Department of Music has a full line-up of concerts and recitals to appeal to a variety of musical tastes during the fall 2013 semester. 

The fall concert schedule features several new and ongoing student ensembles, as well as noted guest artists and faculty musicians.

Student Concerts

The Jazz Singers return to ETSU this fall under the direction of Dr. Alan Stevens.  This premier men’s and women’s vocal ensemble will present “Java and Jazz,” a series of three performances of live jazz music in front of Starbucks in The Cave on the lower level of the D.P. Culp University Center on the ETSU campus.  These will take place on Sept. 23, Oct. 21 and Nov. 18 at 7:30 p.m., and special deals will be available from Starbucks.

Two new student vocal ensembles – the ETSU Women’s Choir and Men’s Choir – will give their debut performances during the Fall Choral Concert on Oct. 6.  This concert, also featuring the ETSU Chorale, will take place at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church, 201 E. Market St.  These same three ensembles will be featured in the ETSU Holiday Choral Concert, with two performances on Dec. 7 at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., also at Munsey Church.

The Women’s and Men’s choirs, along with the Jazz Singers, will present the 2013 Big Fall Show, with a mixture of jazz standards and contemporary pop tunes, on Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 10 at 3 p.m. in the Culp Center’s Martha Street Culp Auditorium.

The ETSU Chamber Winds and Symphonic Winds, under the direction of Dr. Christian Zembower, will present the Opening Fall Bands Concert on Oct. 18 and the Ending Fall Bands Concert on Nov. 21.  Both begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Culp Auditorium.

“Must the Winter Come So Soon?” is a collection of opera scenes for the winter season, to be performed by the ETSU Opera Workshop on Nov. 23 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 24 at 3 p.m. in Mathes Hall.

Two student concerts will take place on Dec. 8.  The Percussion Ensemble will perform at Mathes Hall at 5 p.m., followed by the ETSU Brass Ensembles – the Trumpet, Horn and Trombone choirs and Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble – in a concert entitled “Brass Monkeys” at 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 105 S. Boone St.

“The Ink is Still Wet,” featuring the music of ETSU student composers, will be held in Mathes Hall on Dec. 9 at 7 p.m.

Guest Artist Concerts

The popular Powell Piano Series, named in honor of Jim and Sandy Powell and dedicated to the advancement of solo piano performance by outstanding national and international artists, continues this fall.  Featured pianists will be Esther Park of Korea on Sept. 13, Chu-Fang Huang of China on Oct. 11, and ETSU’s own Dr. Chih-Long Hu, associate professor of piano, on Oct. 26.  These concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. in Mathes Hall.

The Symphony of the Mountains Chamber Ensemble with Concertmaster Sean Claire will present “Music for a Friend” on Sept. 28 at 3 p.m. in Mathes Hall with “bring a friend for free” (two for the price of one) admission. 

The Paramount Chamber Players will give a recital entitled “Unknown Players,” with works by two nearly forgotten master composers, as well as one piece by well-known composer Gabriel Fauré, on Oct. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in Mathes Hall.

Grammy Award-winning trumpeter Wallace Roney will be the featured artist in “Only for One Night,” the 2013 Fall Jazz at the Culp concert on Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Culp Auditorium.  He will share the stage with regional band The Jazz Doctors and the ETSU Jazz Ensemble.

Faculty Concerts

Several recitals will be presented by faculty members from the Department of Music, beginning with “Red-Hot and Blue: Contemporary American Oboe Music” by Dr. Heather Killmeyer on Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m., followed by “A Celebration of Women Composers: Works for the Tuba by Women from Around the World” by Dr. Stephanie Frye, ETSU’s new tuba/euphonium instructor.

Dr. David Champouillon, director of jazz studies in the Department of Music, will present “Cornet à Pistons,” part of the “Around the World in 80…” recital series, on Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church.

Champouillon and Frye will be joined by Carrie Tedder on horn and David Bubsey on trombone for “Brass Knuckles,” the ETSU Faculty Brass Recital, on Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church.

These featured performers will be accompanied by fellow departmental faculty members, as well as other regional musicians.
