Sherrod Library ASERL

JOHNSON CITY (April 2, 2014) — East Tennessee State University’s Charles C. Sherrod Library has been selected as a Center of Excellence for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration through the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries (ASERL).

Since 1942, Sherrod Library has been a member of the Federal Depository Library. One of 22 depository libraries in Tennessee, ETSU’s library has a collection that has grown to over 1 million items while serving as a regional depository for the Environmental Protection Agency, the Appalachian Regional Commission and the Bureau of Mines.

Dr. Mark Ellis, director of Research and Outreach, as well as the Government Documents Law and Maps librarian, says, “We are very pleased that the Government Documents Department has been designated by ASERL to be a Center of Excellence for publications of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

“Within ETSU, the agency’s publications are relevant to the colleges of Medicine, Public Health, Nursing and Education, as well as departments such as Social Work, Sociology, Psychology and Criminal Justice. In addition, the agency’s publications will be of interest to programs at the James H. Quillen Veterans Administration Medical Center, local hospitals and human services agencies.”

Ellis says that because most of the publications are online, they will be accessible to a wide range of users.

The U.S. Federal Depository Library Program disseminates information products from all three branches of the government to over 1,250 libraries nationwide, including more than 250 libraries in the Southeast.
