ETSU ROTC commissioning
JOHNSON CITY (May 1, 2014) — The Military Science Department at East Tennessee State University will hold a Commissioning Ceremony on Friday, May 9, at 9 a.m. in the Amphitheatre. Eight ROTC cadets will become Army second lieutenants during the ceremony. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held in 112 Brown Hall.
The speaker will be the ETSU College of Business and Technology dean, Dr. Linda Garceau, who is retiring at the end of the academic year. Garceau has held the position as dean since 2000. The college enrolls over 2,500 students and encompasses programs in business, computer science, engineering technology, digital media, construction management, fashion merchandising, interior design, and surveying, in addition to military science.
Garceau holds master’s degrees in accountancy and business administration and a doctorate of business administration with a specialization in information systems from Boston University. A certified public accountant, she has published numerous articles in accounting, information systems and data security.
The new second lieutenants will all graduate with bachelor’s degrees in ETSU’s May Commencement exercises.
Meghan Brown, daughter of Debbie and David Brown of Greeneville, will receive a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in criminal justice and will enter the Transportation Corps. After her basic course, she will seek placement in a graduate program to pursue an advanced degree in social work. She will marry fellow cadet Andrew Thomas in May.
Brandie Renee Burchfield is the daughter of Benny and Lisa Burchfield of Morristown. She will receive her bachelor’s degree in psychology and enter the Quartermaster Corps. After completing the basic course, she will enter the Army Reserve unit in Nashville.
Philip Denton, son of Todd and Carla Denton of Johnson City, has earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and criminology. After completing the Medical Service Corps basic course, he will be assigned to the 378th Armored Cavalry Regiment, headquartered in Knoxville.
Adam Harrison, a native of Bristol, is the son of William Harrison and Dena Sturgill. He will receive a bachelor’s degree in history and be commissioned as a second lieutenant in Aviation. He hopes to be assigned to Fort Carson, Colo.
Zachary King earned a bachelor’s degree in construction engineering technology. He is the son of Lori Grabner and Eddie King, both of Greeneville. After completing the Corps of Engineers basic course, he will be assigned to the 357th Engineer Co. in Asheville, N.C.
Joshua McDaniel, son of Johnny and Rozan McDaniel of Cleveland, will receive a bachelor’s degree in nutrition and enter the Ordnance Corps.
James Milhorn, son of Tommy and Cynthia Milhorn of Bluff City, will receive a bachelor’s degree in microbiology and enter the Field Artillery Corps.
Andrew Thomas, son of Barry and Donna Thomas of Knoxville, will marry fellow cadet Meghan Brown in May. He will receive a degree in criminal justice and criminology, and he is assigned to the Armor Corps.
