Tuell Scholarship Program

JOHNSON CITY (December 15, 2014) – Dr. Dawn Tuell, an associate professor and residency program director in the Department of Pediatrics at East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine, has been accepted into the Educational Scholarship Program of the Academic Pediatric Association (APA).

The mission of the program is to assist pediatric educators in developing themselves as productive, advancing and fulfilled faculty members and to increase the quality, status and visibility of pediatric educators in academia.

The curriculum includes didactic sessions, self-directed learning activities, development of an educator portfolio and a mentored project. Scholars are expected to complete the full curriculum, including projects, over three to four years.

“I am honored to be selected by the Academic Pediatric Association Educational Scholars Program. Over the next three years, I will learn about educational research and develop a research project involving graduate medical education,” Tuell said. “I look forward to working with this established national program to further educational research in the Department of Pediatrics at Quillen College of Medicine.”

Tuell is one of just 24 pediatric educators to be accepted into the program’s most recent cohort.

“Dr. Tuell is very gifted as a pediatric educator and this program will help increase her effectiveness and contribution to medical education,” said Dr. David Wood, chair of the Pediatrics Department at Quillen and chief medical officer at Niswonger Children’s Hospital. “She has extraordinary potential as a medical educator.”

The APA Educational Scholars Program was created in 2006. Sixty-three scholars have graduated with a Certificate of Excellence in Educational Scholarship. The program currently has an additional 41 active scholars.
