McCarty regional award

JOHNSON CITY (April 3) — East Tennessee State University’s Manager of Postal Services Don McCarty has received the regional Mail Manager of the Year award from the College and University Mail Services Association (CUMSA).
CUMSA’s was established in 1988 “to establish standards, promote ethics, and foster professionalism for campus mail personnel.”
McCarty joined the staff at ETSU two years ago after a 27-year career with the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served in numerous postal assignments, including Senior Postal Officer for the Marine Corps, Postal Operations Officer for the Department of Defense and Senior Postal Officer for Marine Forces in Iraq.
Since arriving at ETSU, McCarty has initiated many student-friendly services like the Intelligent Package Delivery system, which automatically notifies students when their package is available for pick-up and allows them to access the package up to 20 hours a day; a postal kiosk for purchasing stamps and mailing packages; and notification by email when students have a first-class letter. He supervised renovations including the installation of several new programs and equipment that reduced department mailing cost while increasing the ability to automate mail preparation procedures like addressing, folding, inserting and tabbing, as well as address list processing, all at no cost to university departments.
McCarty notes, “This award is not mine alone. It reflects the hard work and dedication of my entire staff and the tremendous support from my supervisor and the leadership at ETSU.”
David Collins, vice president for Finance and Administration says McCarty has helped to transform mail services since his arrival two years ago.
“He has installed student-friendly services and implemented processes resulting in several thousand dollars of savings to university departments,” Collins added. “We are fortunate to have him on our campus.”
