Homecoming '19: "X Marks the Spot"
JOHNSON CITY – “X Marks the Spot” where East Tennessee State University students, alumni and employees and the public can find the “treasures” of fun and fellowship during the university’s 2019 Homecoming festivities.
Homecoming activities will take place Oct. 28-Nov. 3 on the campus of ETSU, featuring a variety of traditional and new events.
The Banner Competition, in which student organizations participating in Homecoming paint banners related to the Homecoming theme of “X Marks the Spot,” will take place Monday, Oct. 28, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at Borchuck Plaza in front of the Sherrod Library.
The traditional Kick Off and Pep Rally will be held Oct. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the Quad, followed by a “Paint U” DJ and Paint Party at 7 p.m.
In “President for a Day,” students may donate five canned goods to be entered into a random drawing to trade places with ETSU President Brian Noland for a day. Donations, which will go to Bucky’s Food Pantry serving members of the ETSU campus community in need, will be accepted between 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Borchuck Plaza Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 29-30, and at the Quad Thursday and Friday, Oct. 31-Nov. 1.
A Cornhole Tournament on Oct. 29 at 4 p.m. at the Quad will be preceded by free cornhole play from 2-4 p.m.
Also on Tuesday, a Zipline, S’mores and Pumpkin Painting event will take place at the Basler Center for Physical Activity’s (CPA) outdoor Aerial Adventure Course, located on the west side of campus at 503 Go Bucs Trail.
Captain Kidd Goat Yoga is planned for Oct. 30 at 5 p.m. in the front lawn of the CPA.
The Canned Food Creations competition will be held Oct. 31 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the William B. Greene Jr. Football Stadium. Student organizations will build creations related to the Homecoming theme out of canned foods that will later be donated to Second Harvest Food Bank. Dry food items will also be collected for Bucky’s Food Pantry.
Skit Night on Nov. 1 from 7:30-9 p.m. at the Ballad Health Athletic Center (Mini Dome) will feature student organizations’ interpretations of the “X Marks the Spot” Homecoming theme through skits and dance.
The traditional Luncheon Under the Tent hosted by the ETSU National Alumni Association will be Saturday, Nov. 2, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at the CPA courtyard. The event features a luncheon catered by Firehouse Restaurant, with special seating for the reunion classes of 1979, 1989, 1999 and 2009 and other affinity groups. Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for children, and are available at www.etsualumni.org.
The Homecoming Football Game between the ETSU Buccaneers and The Citadel will be held Nov. 2 at 3:30 p.m. at Greene Stadium. For tickets, visit etsubucs.com or call 423-439-3878.
Additional Buccaneer sporting events throughout the week include two women’s volleyball games in Brooks Gym, the first against Mercer at 6 p.m. on Nov. 1 and the second against Chattanooga at 8 p.m. on Nov. 2; a men’s soccer game against Wofford at Summers-Taylor Stadium at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 2; and the Southern Conference Cross-Country Championships at Johnson City’s Pine Oaks Golf Course on Nov. 2, with women running at 10 a.m. and men at 10:45 a.m.
The National Pan-Hellenic Council Unity Showcase, focusing on the history of Black Greek life at ETSU, will be held Nov. 2 at 8 p.m. at the Ballad Health Athletic Center (Mini Dome), followed by the Black Affairs Homecoming Comedy Show at 9 p.m. at the same location. Benji Brown will headline the free public Comedy Show, with guest Dukk.
Homecoming will close on Sunday, Nov. 3, with the traditional Gospel and International Choir Concert at 3:30 p.m. in the Brown Hall auditorium. The concert will feature not only these ETSU student choirs, but also special guest choirs and praise teams from the community.
