Rotation Experience in Alaska

Meet P4s Teri Templin, from Graysville, Tennessee, and Maggie Bielski, Park Ridge, Illinois, who served on rotation at the Ethel Lund Medical Center in Juneau, Alaska. Their preceptor was Dr. Casey Hamon.

What does your day look like on rotation?

Counseling patients, managing anticoagulation with warfarin and DOACs (direct oral anticoagulants), answering drug information questions, topic discussions, presenting on a topic of choice, clinic improvement project, patient case presentation, and reflection on experience.

What is something unique about this rotation you might not experience elsewhere?

Pharmacists and interns at this site manage the anticoagulation patients. We checked INRs International Normalised Ratio testing to determine how blood is clotting) and interviewed patients in the pharmacy and adjusted doses of warfarin through a CPA(clinical pharmacy anticoagulation service) with clinic providers.

Why did you choose Gatton?

Teri: I chose Gatton for many reasons. I love East Tennessee and all of the nature trails in the area. On my interview day, everyone was so personable and spoke to me like they knew me. It reminded me of my hometown, and I knew I wanted to stay.

Maggie: I chose Gatton because of the immediate cozy, family feel. The backdrop of the mountains and the friendliness of the people involved with the program made me realize Gatton was my new home.
