Old Business:

The council members discussed extensively the various points of interpretation regarding the Graduate Faculty appointment guidelines. One of the main points discussed was what constitutes enough productivity in order to be appointed Graduate Faculty member status. The Guidelines for Graduate Faculty Appointment states the criteria to be appointed a member as follow:

“A faculty member with a terminal degree who demonstrates productivity in graduate teaching; scholarly research, publication, or creative activity; directing graduate student research; serving on graduate student advisory committees; grant writing; and/or providing department, college, university, or professional leadership, but who lacks extensive contributions or an extended record of accomplishments in these areas, is eligible for member status. A member of the Graduate Faculty is eligible to teach graduate courses, including 4XX7/5XX7 and 4956/5956 courses, and can chair or serve on graduate student advisory committees. A member is appointed for a five-year term.”

The section with the language “and/or” gives the subcommittee flexibility in interpreting the curriculum vita and graduate faculty appointment/re-appointment form submitted by faculty for graduate status. Dr. Scott Champney conducted a poll of council members to indicate if he/she agreed to the language as it stands. In the polling, each member reiterated the reason why he/she agreed or disagreed with the language in the graduate faculty appointment form. Consequently, each council member agreed to allow the language to remain as stated. However, council members requested the form to include larger check boxes, the phrase “attached explanatory memo”, and the number (s) of thesis and/or dissertation chaired. The graduate faculty appointment/re-appointment form will be updated and discussed at the next meeting.

New Business:

Dr. Wallace Dixon requested the proposed name change for Ph.D. Clinical Psychology. This will allow a second concentration entitled Experimental Psychology.

Dr. McIntosh proposed drafting catalog language change for policies related to graduate certificate programs. As background the certificate programs were utilized as a recruiting tool. The idea was students be admitted into the non-degrees and switch to a degree program. Also, the certificate program offers licensure, post master certificates, and doctoral certificates.

Other:

Dr. McIntosh will submit details of the THEC Public Agenda for Tennessee Higher Education at a later date when more information becomes available. However, one of the main points emphasizes retention and graduating students more than on enrollment in accordance to the TBR new policy.

Adjournment:

There was no further business to conduct; therefore, the council meeting was adjourned at 2:55 p.m.
