Division of Student Affairs Staff
Dr. Joe H. Sherlin, Jr., Vice President for Student Affairs

Executive officer of the Division for Student Affairs reporting to the President and serving as a member of university Executive Team and the University Council.

Dr. Sherlin provides leadership for the Division; develops and approves Division policy and procedure, budgets, staff appointments, appeals, salaries, requisitions, and travel requests; evaluates services and provides leadership for strategic planning.

He is also the Division liaison to campus and community constituents and serves on the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) Student Affairs Sub Council; Chairs the Technology Access Fee Committee, and Student Affairs Council, and serves as a resource for students and student organizations.

Dr. Jeff S. Howard, Associate Vice President for Student Engagement & Dean of Students

Assists with supervision and management of the Division of Student Affairs.

Dr. Howard directly supervises the Assistant Deans and Directors of the following areas: Basler Center for Physical Activity (Campus Recreation, Fitness & Wellness, Intramurals, Outdoor Adventure, Sport Clubs, Team Challenge & Aerial Adventure Course), Dean of Students Office (Student Conduct, CARE, Student Title IX Complaints, and Disability Services), Multicultural Affairs, New Student & Family Programs and the Buccaneer Family Association, Student Activities (Student Organization Resource Center /SORC, Civic Engagment & Leadership, and Fraternity & Sorority Life), and Student Publications

He serves as advisor to the ETSU Student Government Association (SGA) and chairs the SAAC - Student Activities Allocation Committee.

Dr. Michelle Byrd, Assistant Dean of Students

Dr. Byrd serves as the chief student conduct officer, advises campus conduct boards, and serves as a member of the University Judicial Board and as a campus resource for academic misconduct/integrity matters. 

She is the central office liaison for students of concern and CARE response and campus emergency response

She supervises the Disability Services office and chairs both the CARE Team and Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT).

Ben Daugherty, Assistant Director of Student Affairs Advancement

Responsible for developing and coordinating a comprehensive strategic fundraising plan for the Division of Student Affairs including the Roan Scholars program; conducting activities to raise private support; cultivating donor relations with individuals, foundations, and the corporate and business sectors; and for performing other related duties as assigned. 

Develops a fundraising plan for the Division of Student Affairs that includes donor visits, cultivation, stewardship, solicitation, annual giving, and the development of other appropriate volunteer structures and committees.

Janice Gilbert, Office Coordinator

Provides administrative support for the Vice President for Student Affairs and assists in planning and preparation of Division's Assessment/Planning system, support for Technology Access Fee Committee, and support for the university Student Conduct system.

Theresa Marlow, Office Coordinator

Provides administrative support to the AVP/Dean of Students and Vice President for Student Affairs; Director of Multicultural Affairs; Student Government Association; Student Affairs Council; ETSU Gospel Ensemble; and Black Affairs Association.

Vicky Tipton, Receptionist

Provides administrative support and serves as the face and voice of Student Affairs at the Division of Student Affairs central office front desk.
