Planning for Quality of Life: Cuba, NY
(First participated in 2010)
Alfred State College is located in Allegany County, one of the poorest counties in
New York State. The small rural communities in this county need assistance in developing
master plans and creating a vision for improvement. Students were assigned a town
(or town/village/hamlet combination) and photographically documented examples of each
of their assigned area(s) of focus. The photos were enhanced to clearly illustrate
each of the physical characteristics and were presented along with suitable (and enhanced)
site plans in a PowerPoint presentation. A SWOT Analysis was also included that outlines
the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats in each area. Working individually
and in small groups, students thoroughly researched and documented the subject area,
completed a site analysis report, generated conceptual ideas, and compiled the information
generated into a comprehensive master plan for presentation.
