Public Policy Options for Building a Sustainable Future in Appalachia
In the fall semester, 2009, the Department of Public Policy and Community Service
(PPCS) offered the Senior Practicum (PPCS 400) in which five students undertook collaborative
research projects in partnership with the staff of agencies and organizations in Washington
and Smyth counties in Virginia. In addition to the persons working in these agencies,
students worked directly with clients. This multi-tiered collaborative process resulted
in identification of specific policy questions, connected to real needs and issues
in the community, with students researching those questions. The assignments matched
the needs of communities and agencies with the skills and strengths of the student
researcher. All parties to the partnership signed a contract detailing work to be
performed, tangible outcomes and goals, and deliverables to the community.
