EXHUBERANCE! Kids Make Art About Art

The Reece Museum’s fall 2014 resident artist, Sammie L. Nicely, worked with students from Northside Elementary and Carver Recreational Center (both in Johnson City). Taking three pieces from the Reece’s permanent collection with him into the classrooms. Sammie then worked with the students, who age from 6 to 14, to respond to these pieces by making their own works of art. Using graphite and pastel markers the student responded to work by Maggie Ledes, Carla Deike as well as one of Sammie’s own pieces. Students from the Carver Recreational Center also responded to this work by creating ceramic masks. EXUBERANCE! was the cumulative result of this project and opened in the Spring of 2015.

Best of Tennessee Craft

The Best of Tennessee Craft is a juried biannual competition that celebrates and showcases the finest contemporary and traditional craft our state has to offer. The exhibition is hosted by different Tennessee institutions and in the Spring of 2016 the Reece Museum was honored to host the exhibition selected by guest juror Annie Carlano, senior curator of craft, design, and fashion at the Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina.

A New Subjectivity: Figurative Painting after 2000

Pratt Manhattan Gallery presented A New Subjectivity: Figurative Painting after 2000, an exhibition composed entirely of paintings by women that attempts to categorize Expressionism in new terms. The paintings by five internationally known New York women artists and one London-based artist are emotionally arresting and lend themselves to poetic descriptive license. The Reece Museum hosted the exhibition in the Fall of 2017. The museum developed and offered tours designed for low-visual and blind members of the campus and regional community. These tours will featured descriptive audio scripts, tactile texture samples and composition boards.

Self-Taught Art by Any of Its Names

The Reece Museum and the Mary B. Martin School of the Arts in cooperation with Grey Carter—Objects of Art, presented Self-Taught Art By Any of Its Names, an exhibition celebrating the work of over twenty self-taught artists in the Fall of 2018. The exhibition, curated by Grey Carter, explored the work of artists who have not attended art school, but who have nevertheless created compelling art. As the exhibition title suggests, the work of these artists are commonly attributed labels such as outsider, folk, visionary, primitive, or naïve art. For these artists it is their background, environment or even personal challenges that are typically given more attention than the artwork itself.
