Since 1982, ETSU Bluegrass, Old-Time, And Roots Music Studies has been on the vanguard of academic scholarship of this uniquely Appalachian American musical family tree. It’s the first program of its kind at a university anywhere on the planet; it’s also the first university to offer a B.A. in this field of study. The program has the highest out-of-state enrollment of any department on campus, with 2/3 of its students from across the US and around the world. Graduates have gone on to successful careers in the music industry (both on stage and and behind the scenes), museum administration, nonprofit management, community development, education, state parks and more.
