What is Mock Trial?
A mock trial is a simulation of trial proceedings, with students playing the roles of attorneys and witnesses. The mock trial is based on a packet of hypothetical case materials that include documents such as: indictments, motions, case law, statutory law, witness affidavits, and evidentiary exhibits.
Participating in mock trial helps students build valuable skills that are essential for success in the legal profession and beyond. Some of these skills include:
- Critical Thinking: Team members learn to analyze complex legal issues, evaluate evidence, and construct persuasive arguments.
- Public Speaking: Mock trial hones public speaking skills as team members learn to present their case, examine witnesses, and deliver opening and closing statements.
- Teamwork: Mock trial requires collaboration with team members to develop case strategies, prepare witnesses, and coordinate arguments, fostering teamwork and interpersonal skills.
- Analytical Skills: Team members learn to dissect legal problems, identify key issues, and craft effective solutions.
- Confidence: Engaging in mock trial competitions helps team members build confidence in their abilities to think on their feet, present arguments persuasively, and handle challenging situations.
Participation in mock trial equips students with a diverse set of skills that are transferable to a variety of professions.
