Introduction:

Are you looking for a future in in helping people communicate? This UG program introduces you to and prepares you for a graduate degree in Clinical Audiology (Doctor of Audiology) and Speech-Language Pathology (Master of Science in SLP). 

Program Description:

Students in the UG Minor program study the normal aspects of the communication process and are introduced to disorders of speech, language and hearing. The courses will cover concepts related to anatomy and physiology of the hearing and speech mechanisms; speech and hearing science; and normal development of speech and language production and perception. 

The 6 course sequence is offered online in an asynchronous learning environment to offer maximum flexibility and allow students to learn at times that best fit their schedule  These courses offer students a broad-based knowledge in the basic aspects of speech, language and hearing sciences and prepares them for graduate study in audiology or speech-language pathology or for potential employment opportunities in related health and behavioral fields.

Junior Year Fall Semester

  • CDIS 4000 - Communication Sciences and Disorders (3 credits)
  • CDIS 4037 - Anatomy & Physiology of the Speech & Hearing Systems (3 credits)

Junior Year Spring Semester

  • CDIS 4027 - Introduction to Audiology (4 credits)

Senior Year Fall Semester

  • CDIS 4017 -Introuction to Speech Science (4 credits)

Senior Year Spring Semester

  • CDIS 4060 - Language Development (3 credits) -  Prerequisite: CDIS 4000

  • CDIS 4200 -     The Clinical Process (3 credits) - Prerequisite: CDIS 4000

Note: These courses are the prerequistes for the ETSU Speech-Language Pathology program and is highly recommended for the ETSU Audiology Doctoral (AuD) program.

Additional requirements:

Prerequisite coursework needed for conditional and unconditional admission consideration to the Speech-Language Pathology Program includes:

  • A minimum of three (3) credit-hours in the biological sciences.
  • A minimum of three (3) credit-hours in the physical sciences  (physics or chemistry).
  • A minimum of three (3) credit-hours in statistics.
  • A minimum of six (6) credit-hours in the behavioral and/or social sciences that include study that pertains to understanding normal/abnormal human behavior, development across the lifespan, social interaction, and issues of culturally diverse population.
  • At least twenty-five (25) clinical observation credits under the supervision of an ASHA-certified professional.
