Security
ETSU is strongly committed to sustaining high standards in the protection of data assets and information technology resources that support the University’s academic, enterprise, and research operations and objectives. Below are the Operational and Business services the Information Security team currently offer to help the university reach and exceed these objectives.
Alertus
Alertus is the university's primary desktop notification for emergency communications. Agents are installed on most campus desktop systems as part of the default software load. In the event of an emergency, the alert screen will take over and display the message. If there are systems running specialized equipment there can be exceptions made to have the installation blocked and the software removed. If there is a need for this please contact the ITS Help Desk for assistance.
Firewall
A firewall establishes a barrier between a trusted, secure internal network and another outside network, such as the Internet that is assumed not to be secure or trusted.
To request a Firewall Exception complete a Firewall Exemption Request Form (ETSU account login required).
HIPAA
For storage of Protected Health Information (PHI) data, please contact the Office of HIPAA compliance.
Security Cameras
The Security Camera Subcommittee reviews requests and makes recommendations regarding the placement of security cameras on the ETSU campus. Departments may choose to pay for the purchase and maintenance of cameras in their area if not determined necessary by the subcommittee. ITS is responsible for the installation and maintenance of campus security cameras. Please review the ETSU Security Camera Policy for complete information.
Security Software
ETSU is currently using Microsoft System Center Endpoint Protection on computers configured for the ETSU domain. If you have a machine that needs to have an antivirus program installed, or if you need it to have Symantec Endpoint Protection that's currently installed on a machine, please contact the ITS Help Desk so that we may put in a ticket to have this done. Please do not try to install Microsoft Security Essentials onto an ETSU computer.
Security Training
ETSU offers Security Awareness Training through KnowBe4, which helps change user behavior while helping our organization manage risk. Interactive learning is a key focus of security awareness training content and focuses on helping learners both "know" and "do" the right thing at the right time with accuracy and consistency. ETSU employees are required to completed security awareness training annually. Visit the ITS Information Security website for more details and to access the security awareness training login.
Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Certificates
SSL certificates are used to ensure information is transmitted in a secure fashion. If you wish to have a certificate for your server with the hostname ending in .etsu.edu, the certificate vendor sites will generate an automatic request for approval by ITS. Please contact the Help Desk in advance to notify them the request will be forthcoming.
