High School Tennis Is Back!

High School Tennis Is Back!

After a hiatus of thirty years, the University High School Tennis Team is back! To start their season, the Buccaneers will be facing South Greene High School at 3:30 PM on Monday, April 3 on the CPA courts on campus at ETSU.

"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring back the University High School Tennis Team this year," said University School Director, Dr. Brian Partin. "Although we are extremely appreciative to the Unicoi County High School Administrators, Coaches and Team for allowing our student-athletes participate with them through a cooperative program these past couple of years, we are looking forward to cheering on our athletes in their blue and gold this season," said Partin. Students and faculty alike are excited to see the team take the court again, and the players are ready to make their mark in the division.

Despite the long break from competition, some of the team players have already shown that they have what it takes to be successful. This year's team is a mix of returning players and new recruits. Many University High players have been part of a co-op program with Unicoi County High School tennis team for the past few years. Last year, Lily Mefford made it all the way to the singles finals match in the Class A State Tournament where she placed as runner up. In the regional competition, Kaylee DeGennaro and Jordan Havert participated in individual doubles, making it to the semifinals. Several boys players participated as well, and show great promise for the upcoming season.

Head Coach of the high school Bucs will be former college athlete and avid tennis player Matt Trivett. Serving as assistant coaches are Mike Norris, a local tennis pro at the Johnson City Country Club with over 38 years of experience coaching players of all levels, and Jamie and Mike Mefford who will be helping with administrative matters and logistics. Each of the coaches are eager to help boost the University High program to the highest level.

The addition of new players and the return of previously successful players is not only exciting for the players and their families, but for the entire University School community. As the season progresses, we will be watching eagerly to see what this talented group of athletes will achieve. Go Bucs!
