- Third Floor

-
Explore Culp Center - The Welcome Center
Your journey starts at the ETSU Welcome Center. This is where our in-person campus visits are held. If you are interested, you can simply register for one on the website at etsu.edu/visit. If you are on campus between 8am and 4:30pm, Monday through Friday, feel free to stop in to chat with an Admissions Counselor or grab some useful information.
-
Explore Culp Center - First Floor
Welcome to the newly renovated D.P Culp Student Center. This is the hub of campus dining and student activities and resources. As you enter the first floor you’ll see and smell many of our retail dining options including a full-service Starbucks, Chick fil a, and steak n shake. These locations accept ETSU Dining Dollars or ID Bucs both of which are uploaded straight to your student ID for easy use. You will also see the University Bookstore which is where I buy the majority of birthday, Christmas, and holiday gifts for my friends and family then simply drop them in mail in the attached post office!
Further down is the Cave. You can’t miss it and its impressively large piece of limestone which showcases a unique geological element of our region. Many campus-wide events are held in this space. At least once a week I grab some lunch and head over to listen to live music by some of our most talented Buccaneers. You will also notice the wall of screens over the main stage. ETSU launched a varsity ESports team in the fall of 2020. This arena is where ETSU will host national ESports competitions right on campus!
Also with the reopening, there was a push from students to incorporate services and resources that we would normally have to go off campus to access. For example, without a car, it was difficult for me to find time to get my hair cut, now I just make an appointment for one of the days a traveling barber shop sets up in the Culp!
Go ahead and make your way up the grand staircase or elevator to explore the second floor!
-
Explore Culp Center - Second Floor
The second floor holds student activities and resources. As you walk around, picture yourself working on a breaking news article for the East Tennessean newspaper, weighing in on campus policy with the Student Government Association, or meeting with your Sorority or Fraternity advisor. Career Services and Housing and Residence Life are also located on this floor. Career services is where students can make individual appointments to get help with career exploration, job applications, resumes, or interview skills. Be sure to attend the ETSU job fairs in the fall and spring semesters! Housing and Residence life can provide more information about the options and opportunities for students living on campus.
To your left, the Carrier Center has space and meeting rooms for student organizations to gather and create. To your right is the Multicultural Center which promotes diversity and brings multicultural awareness to campus. This center includes diversity educators, mentoring, and QUEST for Success, a student transition program for underrepresented students to become acclimated to campus. They also host programming such as guest speakers, a multicultural showcase, unity festival, and Africa night.

ETSU has partnerships with over 300 study abroad programs to choose from in over 50 countries including Harlaxton College where students can spend a semester or summer in an 18th century manor house located only an hour north of London. I encourage a quick google search, you won’t be sorry!
Check out the view from the East Tennessee Room before you head up to the third floor.
Stop 2: Sherrod Library Area
- Charles C. Sherrod Library
- Reece Museum
- Roger-Stout Hall

-
Explore The Charles C Sherrod Library
As you approach the Sherrod Library, you’ll walk through Borchuck Plaza, a free speech area on campus. If you have a social justice issue or something you want to alert the public about, feel free to do it here. The fountain featured here is a memorial to the first five African American students to integrate the university and are depicted on the wall to the right.
As you enter the library, you’ll immediately smell the delicious aroma of coffee and bagels from Einstein Brothers Bagels. You won’t see many books on the first floor, but it does hold many important student resources including the Testing Center and the Center for Academic Achievement which provides in- person and online 1 on 1 tutoring services for almost all ETSU courses and regular group tutoring sessions for especially rigorous classes.
At the base of the main staircase you can see a large screen that depicts the student study rooms located in the library. From here, you can see which are available and reserve one for your study group! If you are unsure of the services the Library has to offer, you can consult a student Library Ambassador or, for research help, make an appointment online with one of the librarians.
Make sure to venture upstairs to see the cozy study spaces, collections of books, beautiful views of campus, and on the third floor, the Archives of Appalachia which stewards nearly two miles of rare manuscripts, 250,000 photographs, and 14,000 books that document life in Southern Appalachia and are utilized by scholars around the world.
-
Explore The Reece Museum & Roger-Stout Hall
Rogers-Stout Hall is home to our social science and humanities programs including History, Psychology, Philosophy, Sociology and Anthropology, Criminal Justice, and Political Science. It also houses the Applied Social Research Laboratory which gives both undergraduate and graduate students the chance to work with regional clients, such as the Johnson City Police Department, to collect high-quality data to meet their evaluation or survey needs.
For students interested in Politics, ETSU has a partnership with the Washington Center which gives students the chance to spend a semester working on capitol hill!
Beside Roger Stout Hall is the B. Carroll Reece Museum. Accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, the Reece Museum houses over 20,000 artifacts relevant to Appalachian culture and exhibits work from artists around the region, including our students.
Stop 3 : Govenor's Hall (Residence Hall)
- Govenor's Hall

-
Explore Governor’s Hall
Governor’s Hall is one of our many residence halls on campus. Accommodations here house two students per room with their own private bathroom. Residence halls are spread out across campus and accommodations range from those with community-style bathrooms, to suite-style pairs of rooms with a shared living space, to rooms with their own kitchenettes, and apartment-style halls. Cost varies depending upon the type of facility and you can see a full list of residence halls on our website. To tour a residence hall, call the Housing and Residence Life Office, or stop by when you visit the next stop on our audio tour, Burgin Dossett Hall.
Located behind Governor’s Hall, through the archway to the left, is Tri Hall Field, a common space for Governor’s Hall, Davis Apartments, and Centennial Hall. It houses a built-in volleyball field and basketball courts and hosts community activities such as movie nights.
Don’t forget to look into our Living Learning Communities, where students can live in proximity to those of similar interests and background. These LLC’s often have built in upper-classman and faculty/staff mentors, co-curricular opportunities, and field trips.
Stop 4: Burgin Dossett Hall
- Burgin Dossett Hall

- Mathes Hall
- Burleson Hall

-
Explore Ball, Mathes, & Burleson Halls
The large structure in front you is comprised of three separate buildings:
On the left is Ball Hall which is home to the Department of Art and Design and the Slocomb Gallery. This gallery works to display innovative student work and diverse traveling exhibitions. Their overall goal is to support the academic experiences and the cultural development of the region through collaborative programing with various units and community institutions. One of my favorite exhibitions was about Dolly Parton and included a musical performance by ETSU’s Chorale, a talk concerning her impact on Appalachian and Pop Culture, and an art show.
The middle building is Mathes Hall where you can find the classrooms and practice rooms for students involved in the Department of Music. Even if you aren’t planning on majoring or minoring in music at ETSU, anyone can be a part of an ensemble, chorus, or marching band and be eligible for any associated scholarships!
The right building is Burleson Hall which houses the Department of Literature and Language. Mark this one on your map, because just about every ETSU student has at least one course in this building!
Stop 7: The Quad
- The Quad
- Tree House Takeout
- Brooks Gym
- Sam Wilson Hall
- Campus Center
- Veterans Memorial

-
Explore The Quad & Tree House Takeout
Welcome to the Quad- one of the main hubs for student activities, events, and hanging out. As a new student, this is where you may find your future ETSU family at our Student Activities and Organizations fair during the first week of classes, you could learn how to square dance and listen to amazing student bluegrass bands at Bucky’s Barn Dance, and attend concerts and pep rallies. To your right, you’ll find Treehouse Takeout a great place to swing by for a quick grab and go lunch, or order something made to order and eat it out on the patio. -
Explore Brooks Gym
In the center is Brooks Gym where our Lady Bucs Basketball team practices and competes. It houses our ROTC and military science programs as well as our Bluegrass, Old time, and Country Music department which was the first program of its kind to be established at any university. One more fun fact, if you are looking to take a PE credit at ETSU, this building holds the studio for Aerial Dance, it’s a blast. -
Explore Sam Wilson Hall
Next door is Sam Wilson Hall, home of the College of Business and Technology and the only single college to have an in-house career services center. There is a large focus on internship placement, networking, and real-world experiences in this college whether you are studying Business, Engineering Technology, Interior Architecture, or Digital Media. -
Explore The Campus Center Building & Veterans Memorial
Next to Sam Wilson Hall is the Campus Center Building. Several offices, such as The Department of Theatre and Dance, the Women’s Studies Program, and the Language and Culture Resource Center, are located here. The Language and Cultural Resource Center works to increase awareness and understanding of diversity by involving faculty, staff, and students in experiences such as the annual Hispanic Student Day and offers services for translation and interpretation. Also found on the lower level of the Campus Center Building is the George L. Carter Railroad Museum. The railroad museum is named in honor of George L. Carter, railroad mogul to our region and founder of the East Tennessee Normal School, which became East Tennessee State University.
Overlooking the quad is Veterans Memorial which features the American Flag and a flag representing every branch of the military honoring the brave ETSU affiliated men and women who have fought for our country.

The large white slope on your right is ETSU’s Ballad Health Athletic Center (Mini Dome). This “not so mini” structure houses an indoor stadium which is ETSU’s official indoor venue for tennis and track. In addition to athletics, the dome is home to the Clemmer College academic Department of Sports, Exercise, Recreation, and Kinesiology on the east side. The majority of ETSU’s physical education classes including fly fishing, horseback riding, golf, and marksmanship are taught in the Ballad Health Athletic Center (Mini Dome). This is a versatile space and a unique landmark of the campus. I can always spot it during a visit to the tip top of the 2,700 ft Buffalo Mountain located right off campus.
ETSU began as a teacher preparation school in 1911 and to your left is Warf-Pickel Hall, home to Clemmer College, offering our educator preparation programs as well as human serivces and counseling. Clemmer College also operates our Little Bucs Childcare Center that provides affordable care to children of students enrolled at ETSU under 5 years of age and employs both undergraduate and graduate students to support the full-time classroom teachers. It is also home to our Department of Media and Communication, featuring a fully-functional TV studio.
-
Explore Public Safety & the Parking Garage
On the front, you’ll see that ETSU has implemented an electronic sign which lets students know how many spaces are available. Gone are the days of driving through all the floors just to drive back out to no avail. There is plenty of parking on this side of campus and even if your class is on the other end, it’s only about a 15-minute walk. Also keep in mind that parking is not charged as a separate fee for students!
The Public Safety team is responsible for the overall safety and security of the ETSU campus and community. Several campus-wide initiatives have been put into place including Safe Voyage which allows students to request public safety escorts as they walk across campus and as you continue your tour, watch out for the 9-foot-tall red Emergency phones. When pushed, an ETSU Public Safety dispatcher will know where you are and dispatch an officer to your location while being able to communicate with you through the phone.

This gorgeous stadium, completed in 2017, was built upon the reinstatement of our ETSU football program in the spring of 2015. On game days, the fields and parking lots around the stadium are packed with students, faculty, staff, community members, and alumni tailgating. Many student organizations and colleges have specific tailgating tents, I love hopping around the celebrations and making new connections as we all celebrate our Buccaneers!
ETSU houses Division 1 sports teams and is proud to be part of the Southern Conference. Along with our football team we have baseball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field, triathlon, volleyball, and basketball teams.
