ETSU Department of Art & Design Condemns Recent Racist Activities on Campus
On Thursday, September 3rd, members of the Slocumb Galleries staff and co-curators for the exhibition Black Diaspora: Reclaiming Experience, Memory and Place were verbally confronted and accosted by three individuals affiliated with white supremacist groups. This occurred prior to a virtual panel discussion broadcasted from the newly opened Langston Centre in downtown Johnson City, entitled Conversations on Race, Education & Social Justice.
This act of aggression targeted the celebration of diversity and the value of inclusivity that are fundamental to the Department of Art & Design and on display in the current exhibition. The Department of Art & Design at East Tennessee State University condemns this assault on our staff and the threat to the safety and well being of our students, staff, and faculty. We denounce racism in all its manifestations because Black Lives Matter. We stand in solidarity and grief with all whose lives that have been shattered and devastated by violence, systemic oppression, inequity, and injustice.
As a Visual Arts program, we are committed to providing meaningful and substantive discourse through exhibitions, visiting artists, scholars, arts professionals, the public, and most importantly through our educational curriculum – all of which engages our students, the ETSU community, and the region.
