The Harlan County Project: Phase Eleven
Over the past ten years, Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College, through
the ATP, has engaged its students and communities in a series of activities designed
to build the capacity of individuals and groups to increase the cultural assets of
Harlan County, Kentucky. This work has involved the creation of works of theater,
public art, and new venues for art and music by local young people. We have stressed
the need for local control of production, the development of local leadership, local
determination of appropriate forms and content for art, and the need to cultivate
and serve local audiences. Our partners in this work are a group of students inside
and outside of ATP classes and a coalition of other community members and Southeast
faculty and staff who participate in the Crawdad and Higher Ground initiatives. This
year, approximately sixty ATP students and one hundred other community members will
participate in the management and design the Crawdad cultural events in the fall of
2011 and spring of 2012. ATP Higher Ground participants will begin script development
for a fourth Higher Ground play.
