May 21-23, 2023

Asheville, North Carolina
Greetings:
Once again, the time has come to prepare to register for the annual gathering of the Society of Appalachian Historians. This year's event marks the twelfth time that we Appalachian historians have gotten together to discuss the discipline and the region. This year our meeting will be in Asheville. We are fortunate to have such strong support among our colleagues and friends from across the Appalachian region, the country, and abroad.
In the spirit of our very first meeting in Cullowhee, the annual meetings of the Society of Appalachian Historians are designed to provide an inviting forum for the dissemination and discussion of innovative historical scholarship on any aspect of Appalachia. Please plan to attend and encourage others, particularly your friends, colleagues, and students working on Appalachian topics, to join us.
In addition to paper presentations on May 22 and May 23, we will have a variety of events for registrants. We will have two historical walking tours on May 21 at 1 and 4 pm. People arriving early, may choose to do a historical tour of downtown Asheville at 1 pm or a Craft Beverage Tour at 4 pm. Both those tours have limited space, so please register early. People who want to try and do both may mark that on their registration forms, and they will be allowed to do both if space allows. On Monday, May 22, we will have a tour of the Buncombe County Special Collections after paper sessions conclude. On Tuesday, May 23, registrants are encouraged to visit and receive a group tour at the Vance Birthplace State Historic Site in Weaverville, just about a dozen miles up the road from Asheville, in the afternoon after we conclude our final panel.
We look forward to seeing you in Asheville!
