The ALW course Wellness for Life (PHED 1130) scheduled for Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, meets three (3) times per week for 8 weeks and two (2) times per week for 7 weeks. Each class meeting is 55 minutes in length.
Students who miss 8 (eight), or the equivalent to 8 (eight), class meetings will receive a failing (F) grade in the course. For this example, if a student misses 7 classes (4 excused & 3 unexcused), and is late to, and/or leaves class early 3 (three) times, the student will receive a failing (F) grade in the PHED 1130 course.
The ALW course Wellness for Life (PHED 1130) scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays,
meets two (2) times per week for 15 weeks. Each class meeting is 70 minutes in length.
Students who miss 6 (six), or the equivalent to (six), class meetings will receive a failing (F) grade in the course. For this example, if a student misses 4 classes (2 excused & 2 unexcused), and is late to, and/or leaves class early 6 (or more) times, the student will receive a failing (F) grade in the PHED 1130 course.
ALW PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY
The philosophy and purpose of the the ALW program is to provide students with an initial experience in sport and fitness activities. Unless specified, all activities are taught at the "beginning" level. It is recommended students select one or more courses from the Fitness Activity category, and one or more courses from the Lifetime Activity category.
Attendance Policy:
The ETSU Department of Exercise Science requires that students must attend a specific portion of all scheduled class time in that course to receive course credit for an Active Lifestyles and Wellness (ALW) program class. Students are expected to attend all scheduled class meetings and attendance may be taken for each class. ALL absences are counted as such. Each time a student is late to class and/or leaves class early three times is equivalent to one absence. Excused absences (as specified in the ETSU Undergraduate Catalog) are allowed as long as the student does not equal or exceed the maximum number of absences (Please see examples below.). With proper verification or documentation as determined by the instructor, students may be allowed to make up work from a class absence.
However, the portions of time in the classes missed (excused and unexcused) remains counted as being absent, late, or leaving early.
Class attendance and participation may be considered in the final grade evaluation. If a student is tardy or leaves early, it is the student's responsibility to speak to the instructor during that class to be sure the students portion of attendance is recorded. Students are responsible for all work missed during their absences.
*Attendance Guidelines for the Academic Year (Fall & Spring Semesters)
(For all ALW courses, each time a student is late to class and/or leaves class early
three times is equivalent to one absence.)
ALW courses meeting twice (2) per week for 55 minutes each class meeting:
Students who miss 6 (six), or the equivalent to 6 (six), class meetings will receive a failing (F) grade in the course. For this example, if a student misses 5 classes (3 excused & 2 unexcused), and is late to and/or leaves class early 3 (or more) times, the student will receive a failing (F) grade in the ALW course.
ALW courses meeting once (1) per week for 110 minutes each class meeting:
Students who miss 3 (three), or the equivalent to 3 (three), class meetings will receive a failing (F) grade in the course. For this example, if a student misses 2 classes (1 excused & 1 unexcused), and is late to and/or leaves class early 3 (or more) times, the student will receive a failing (F) grade in the ALW course.
*Attendance guidelines for ALW courses and Wellness for Life courses offered during the Summer Semesters are determined by the instructor for each class.
