A year of focused and comprehensive training
Externs are 3rd, 4th, or even 5th year students in clinical psychology graduate training programs who seek a high-quality, closely supervised experience in an integrated clinical setting. Externs are Behavioral Health Consultants who serve both patients and their health care team members. Externs will work in fully integrated healthcare teams across the spectrum of primary care including family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, and obstetrics/gynecology. They gain clinical experiences with a wide range of presenting problems both in the context of warm handoffs and routine referral. They learn key skills around focused intervention, a population health approach, and serving as a consultant to an interprofessional team. Depending on interest and training site, externs may participate in quality improvement projects or peer training of students in social work, counseling, and nurse practitioner programs. They may also have opportunities for teaching residents and medical students in the management of behavioral health problems commonly presenting in primary care.
There is a huge demand for psychologists who have specialized training in integrated care. We invite you to come and discover this area that is exploding with potential and grow your resume so you can move toward the career you want!
For the academic years 2021-2025, the ETSU Institute for Integrated Behavioral Health has funding from the HRSA Behavioral Health Workforce Education and Training program to fund fellows with a stipend of $25,000 for 4th year or higher trainees plus funds for travel (both local and for national conference attendance).
