Institutional Outcomes Subcommittee
FOCUS: Monitors data to asses overall institutional accomplishment of educational objectives
DATA SOURCES: Student evaluations of courses/clerkships, student evaluations of instructors and preceptors, NBME Exam scores, USMLE scores, CBSE scores, AAMC GQ, course grades, Match results, Professionalism report
CHARGE: The Institutional Outcomes Subcommittee is a standing committee of the Quillen College of Medicine’s Medical Student Education Committee (MSEC). The Institutional Outcomes Subcommittee is charged with reviewing defined and approved curriculum outcome measures, summarizing the information derived from them, and providing quarterly reports and recommendations to MSEC.
Charge to the Subcommittee:
- Recommend objective benchmarks for each Institutional Educational Objective category and other educational program and curriculum goals.
- Evaluate each established and MSEC approved outcome measure at least annually.
- Provide biannual reports to MSEC summarizing the performance of the curriculum in relation to established benchmarks.
- Recommend items for further action or benchmark modifications.
Through the review and reporting process, items for further required action and/or recommendations / changes will be presented to MSEC, who will have the responsibility for acting on the subcommittee’s reports.
Membership Rotation / Length of Term: Three (3) year terms with reappointment permitted. Members are appointed by the Executive Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs, in consultation with the MSEC Chair.

Curriculum Integration Subcommittee
FOCUS: Evaluates content of threads, develops proposed goals and objectives for threads, and suggests appropriate oversight of approved threads
DATA SOURCES: National curricular models/external curriculum standards, LCME content (DCI), Quillen content threads, assessment outcomes (NBME annual report)
CHARGE: The Curriculum Integration Subcommittee (CIS) is a standing subcommittee of the Quillen College of Medicine’s Medical Student Education Committee (MSEC). CIS makes recommendations to MSEC regarding content areas that span the curriculum (threads / cross-cutting themes), including those which should be considered for adoption as formal components within the required curriculum.
Recommendations will include objectives, sequencing and placement within a year and/or across the span of the entire curriculum. Responsibility for review and evaluation of specific curriculum content topics represented in the curriculum is shared by CIS, MSEC curriculum review processes, and administrative monitoring of curriculum content.
Charge to the Subcommittee:- Evaluation of the design, content, integration, and implementation for MSEC approved threads /cross-cutting themes;
- Facilitate integration of the threads / cross-cutting themes with the core content;
- Propose objectives (knowledge, skills and attitudes) and appropriate instructional methods and assessment methods for MSEC approved threads / cross-cutting themes that will align with the Institutional Educational Objectives;
- Review the MSEC approved threads / cross-cutting themes within the framework of the periodic and comprehensive evaluation of the curriculum (MSEC Policy 0314-10);
- Review the MSEC approved threads / cross-cutting themes;
- Propose policies and/or procedures related to ongoing activities of the threads / cross-cutting themes;
- Propose new curriculum content that is longitudinal in nature;
- Periodically provide reports to MSEC about activities and recommendations;
- Provide data and personnel to participate in the review of curriculum phases and the fourth-year comprehensive review of the curriculum;
- Propose topics for curricular content reports;
- Review curricular content reports and advise MSEC of curricular changes indicated by such reports.

M1/M2 Curriculum Review Subcommittee
FOCUS: Reviews self-studies and performs annual and comprehensive course evaluation Conducts comprehensive reviews at a minimum of every three years
DATE SOURCES: Student evaluations of courses, student evaluations of instructors and preceptors, course director self-studies, course syllabi, NBME exam scores, course grades
CHARGE: The M1/M2 Review Subcommittee is a standing subcommittee of the Medical Student Education Committee (MSEC). It conducts reviews of required courses and clerkships from the clinical phase of the curriculum as described in the Comprehensive and Periodic Review of the Curriculum policy to determine the clerkship or course’s effectiveness as a component of the curriculum.
Charge to the Subcommittee:
- Develop and follow a protocol for accomplishing their work
- Conduct annual and comprehensive reviews based on appropriately completed course/clerkship director self-study forms, independent review of course documents and outcomes, and supplemental information as needed. The review process will be conducted by teams of subcommittee members and/or ad hoc faculty and students selected by the subcommittee, but not to include the course/clerkship director or key teaching faculty for the course/clerkship under review.
- Make determinations about whether a course/clerkship is meeting expectations using an approved course/clerkship review rubric.
- Recommend course/clerkship directors complete a CQI Plan dependent upon the findings of the course/clerkship review.
- Report the findings and recommendations from reviews to MSEC in a timely manner
- For Annual reviews, each subcommittee submits a report to MSEC within three (3) months
of receipt of the completed self-study that includes:
- A summary of the review findings, including educational outcomes, student satisfaction, quality of teaching, learning environment, and currency and accuracy of learning objectives.
- Short-term and long-term recommendations and/or needed follow-up.
- Changes in the course or clerkship that will need to be reflected in the curriculum management system and/or reviewed as part of the curriculum as a whole review.
- For Comprehensive reviews, each subcommittee submits a report to MSEC within six (6)
months of receipt of the completed self-study forms that includes:
- A comprehensive summary of the review findings, including all elements of an annual review, plus analysis of course/clerkship trends, teaching, assessment, content, sequencing, integration, gaps, and unplanned redundancies.
- Short-term and long-term recommendations and/or needed follow-up
- Changes in the course/clerkship that will need to be reflected in the curriculum management system
- For Annual reviews, each subcommittee submits a report to MSEC within three (3) months
of receipt of the completed self-study that includes:
- In the event a course/clerkship meets any of the following, the review subcommittee
may recommend the course/clerkship director complete and submit to MSEC a CQI Plan.
- Any single element (e.g., Assessment, Feedback, and Grading or Educational Outcomes, etc.) on the course/clerkship review rubric with two or more items rated as below expectations
- Three or more total items rated below expectations
- Prior recommended changes not addressed with no reasonable explanation
- Other circumstances as identified by the curriculum review subcommittee, MSEC, or Vice Dean.

Phase Review Subcommittee
FOCUS: Evaluates the effectiveness of the phases of the curriculum, taking into account the primary purposes of each segment of the curriculum and how these function in relation to one another
DATA SOURCES: Reports from MSEC standing subcommittees, USMLE year-end reports, CBSE & CCSE scores, student end-of-year retrospective reviews of the curriculum, AAMC GQ, AAMC Resident Readiness survey
CHARGE: The Phase Review Subcommittee is a standing subcommittee of the Medical Student Education Committee (MSEC). It conducts annual reviews of the pre-clerkship and clinical phases of the curriculum as described in the Periodic and Comprehensive Evaluation of the Curriculum policy to determine the effectiveness of each phase as a component of the curriculum as a whole.
Charge to the Subcommittee:
- Synthesize reports from MSEC standing subcommittees as well as additional supplemental information (USMLE year-end reports, student end-of-year retrospective reviews of the curriculum, status of Institutional Educational Objectives coverage, GQ, etc.) to evaluate curriculum phases.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of the pre-clerkship phase and clinical phase of the curriculum, taking into account the primary purposes of each segment of the curriculum (individual courses and clerkships and distinct time periods of the curriculum) and how these function in relation to one another.
- Report findings to MSEC annually that include:
- Educational outcomes
- Overall quality of phases
- Appropriateness of organization and sequencing
- Adequacy of horizontal and vertical integration
- Alignment with Institutional Educational Objectives
- Identification of gaps or unnecessary redundancies
- Description of learning environment
- Student satisfaction with phases and quality of teaching
- Sufficiency of educational resources
- Recommendations and/or needed follow-up
Membership Rotation / Length of Term: Membership is comprised of the chairs of the other standing MSEC subcommittees and are appointed by virtue of their office.
