What types of programs are offered?
Group programs allow you to travel with a group of students and faculty from the US. Programs are planned for you, and you will travel with your group throughout the duration of the program. These programs are great for first-time travelers, students who wish to avoid planning, or students who want a built-in community of friends.
Group programs include:
- ETSU Faculty-Led Programs - go abroad with faculty and students from ETSU, pay all costs through ETSU, and enroll in an ETSU course
- Direct Enrollment Faculty-Led (programs through CCSA, KIIS, and TnCIS) - go abroad with faculty and students from the US, pay all costs to the program provider, and transfer courses back to ETSU
Independent programs are the traditional study abroad experience that allows you to enroll in another university abroad. Even though these programs involve independent travel, you are not on your own! We work closely with our providers and partner universities to ensure your health and safety while abroad. You will still have your support network at ETSU, but you will also have a support network abroad!
Independent programs include:
- Semester exchange - pay ETSU in-state tuition to ETSU and pay other costs to your university abroad, "switch places" with another student from abroad, usually the cheapest full semester programs, transfer courses back to ETSU
- Direct enrollment universities - pay all costs to the university abroad, transfer courses back to ETSU
- Direct enrollment organizations - pay all costs to the organization, transfer courses back to ETSU
More information about our programs can be found here.
-
What kinds of courses can I take abroad?
Depending on your term and program selection, you can take:
- Courses for your major or minor
- General education courses
- Electives
- Courses that do not count toward your degree plan (usually eligible for scholarships but not financial aid)
Higher level courses can be harder to find abroad, so talk with your academic advisor and plan early to maximize your options!
More information about our programs can be found here.
-
When can I go abroad?
We have programs that take place year-round during the following terms:
- Summer break, winter break, or spring break (short-term programs)
- Fall or Spring semester (long-term programs)
- Academic or Calendar year (long-term programs)
Our programs range in length from 1 week to 1 year and every length of time in between!
More information about our programs can be found here.
Students must attend at least 1 semester at ETSU before participating in a short-term program, or at least 2 semesters at ETSU before participating in a long-term program.
More information about eligibility requirements can be found here.

How can I fund my experience abroad?
Most students use a mixture of scholarships, financial aid, and personal funds to pay for their study abroad programs.
Scholarships are available through ETSU, affiliated organizations and foundations, national organizations, foreign governments, and more.
Depending on your financial aid package, courses, and credit hours, you can also use financial aid that you already receive to pay for your study abroad program. You can even talk with a financial aid advisor while planning!
More information about scholarships and financial aid can be found here.
