Apply to Study Abroad in 3 easy steps!

    Interest Session

    We are here to help you begin your journey! The first step is to attend an interest session, where you will learn about programs, the application process, funding, and more.

  2. Step 2

    Explore Programs & Requirements

    The second step is to find the program that is right for you! We offer a wide variety of programs to locations all around the world. Your academic advisor, a financial aid advisor, and/or a study abroad advisor can help you make the best decision for you.
  3. Step 3

    Complete Applications

    Every student studying abroad must first complete an application the Bucs Abroad Portal. Once you have been approved, you can apply with your program or university, and you can apply for any scholarships to help fund your experience.

Step 1: Interest Session

If you are planning on attending an ETSU Faculty-Led program abroad, you are exempt from attending an interest session. Please contact the ETSU faculty program leader for information.

Do our Interest Sessions not fit into your busy schedule? No worries! Please email studyabroad@etsu.edu prior to the deadline of the semester you plan to study abroad to ask about recorded options or additional interest sessions.

Please note: If fewer than 5 students have registered for any of the above interest sessions, the session will be canceled via email 24 hours in advance.

Financial Aid & Scholarships Info Session

Not sure where to start with exploring funding options for studying abroad? Interested in learning more about the ETSU Study Abroad Scholarship? Join this Zoom info session for an overview of financial aid and scholarships. The session will be recorded for those who cannot attend.

Step 2: Programs & Requirements

Programs

We offer a wide variety of programs, including semester, short-term, direct enrollment, exchange, and partner organization programs. Click HERE to find out more!

Requirements

  • GPA
    Each study abroad program has different GPA requirements. It is best to check with your specific program or university for more information.
  • Good Academic Standing
    To enroll in a study abroad program, a student must maintain a good academic standing. During the application process, students give permission to the University to review their disciplinary records and transcript.
  • Class Standing

    You must have attended at least 1 semester at ETSU in order to participate in short-term study abroad programs, and this semester must be immediately prior to studying abroad. This includes Winter Break, Spring Break, and Summer Break.

    You must have attended at least 2 semesters at ETSU in order to participate in long-term study abroad programs, and these semesters must be immediately prior to studying abroad. This includes semester and academic/calendar year programs.

  • Financial Requirements

    No minimum financial requirements are needed to be able to apply for a study abroad program. Many times, financial aid and scholarships are applied to tuition even when studying in another country!

    Out of state students receive in-state tuition while studying abroad.

  • Language Requirements

    Most programs have no minimum language requirements, although language classes may be required while abroad. Speakers of all proficiency levels are welcome to apply!

Advising

We recommend meeting with your academic advisor, financial aid advisor, and a study abroad advisor before applying.

Study Abroad Advising Form

  • Academic Advisor
    Your academic advisor can help you look at classes you have left to take for your major/minor, which classes are eligible for transfer credit from abroad for your major/minor, and which class subjects/levels would be ideal to take abroad.
  • Financial Aid Advisor

    Lisa Baumer is the study abroad financial aid advisor. She can help you determine which financial aid and scholarships can be used to help pay for study abroad programs. You can schedule a meeting with Lisa HEREby selecting Study Abroad Appt.

  • Study Abroad Advisor

    Courtney Lucas is the Education Abroad Coordinator in charge of all study abroad programs, including semester exchange, Academic Year, Calendar year, and summer and winter break direct enrollment programs.

  • Study Abroad Advising Form Instructions

    The Study Abroad Advising Form is required to apply for all long-term programs including semester exchange, semester direct enrollment, and academic/calendar year programs. The Study Abroad Advising Form is optional for students participating in short-term programs, including programs occurring during Spring Break, Summer Break, or Winter Break.

    This form is for planning purposes only and does not guarantee course approval, financial aid awards, or program acceptance. 

    • Part I - Completed by the student and their academic advisor
      • Together with their academic advisor, the student should list courses remaining in their Degree Works.

      • In the second column, the academic advisor should list any known restrictions for the course. For example, will transfer credit be accepted, or is the course required to be taken at ETSU?
    • Part II - Completed by the student and a financial aid advisor
      • Together with a financial aid advisor, the student should list all types of aid they receive.
      • In the second column, the financial aid advisor should list requirements to use that aid abroad, if possible.
    • Part III - Completed by the student
      • Using the course list of the program abroad, the student should list any course they may be interested in taking.
      • In the second column, the student should list the ETSU course/requirement they hope that the abroad course will fulfill.

     

Step 3: Applications

Bucs Abroad Application

  • Begin by visiting the Bucs Abroad portal HERE. Click "Go to Portal" and log in using your ETSU credentials.
  • Click on the program you're interested in and click "Apply Now."
  • Submit the application before the deadline.
  • Await an email from Study Abroad about a follow-up interview.
  • After the interview, you will be informed of either an acceptance or rejection.

Please note: You must apply through the Bucs Abroad portal before applying through your university or program. You can complete the secondary application after your Bucs Abroad application has been approved.

Students applying for ETSU faculty-led programs will need to complete an application in the Bucs Abroad portal but should contact their trip's faculty leader for further information about next steps.

Program Application

Students joining short-term or long-term direct enrollment and exchange programs (not ETSU faculty-led programs) will have a 2nd application step. After you have been approved in the Bucs Abroad portal, visit the website for your program. Most programs require you to complete their application after being approved by your home university.

Students planning to join semester exchange programs should wait for nomination confirmation before applying.

Each program has their own deadlines and requirements. Make sure you keep up with your program's deadlines, as well as any deadlines from ETSU.

  • Winter Break 2024 - 2025
    • August 15, 2024 - Application due in Bucs Abroad portal by 11:59pm
      • Applications are slated to open in March 2024
    • As soon as possible after acceptance - Apply on program/university website
    • October 1, 2024 - Study Abroad Scholarship Application due by 11:59pm
      • The Study Abroad Scholarship application is slated to open in Fall 2024
    • Please note: Each program/university and other scholarships will have their own deadlines, separate from the deadlines listed here.
  • Spring 2025
    • April 15, 2024 - Application due in Bucs Abroad portal by 11:59pm
      • Applications are slated to open in January 2024
    • As soon as possible after acceptance - Apply on program/university website
    • October 1, 2024 - Study Abroad Scholarship Application due by 11:59pm
      • The Study Abroad Scholarship application is slated to open in Fall 2024
    • Please note: Each program/university and other scholarships will have their own deadlines, separate from the deadlines listed here.
  • Summer 2024
    • January 15, 2024 - Application due in Bucs Abroad portal by 11:59pm
    • As soon as possible after acceptance - Apply on program/university website
    • January 15, 2024 - Study Abroad Scholarship Application due by 11:59pm
    • Please note: Each program/university and other scholarships will have their own deadlines, separate from the deadlines listed here.
  • Fall 2024
    • January 15, 2024 - Application due in Bucs Abroad portal by 11:59pm
    • As soon as possible after nomination- Apply on program/university website
