Resilient Schools
The Resilient Schools Project was created to explore how community-engaged learning could support PK-12 school improvement goals and address adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) among teachers and students in rural Northeast Tennessee. Beginning with Unicoi County Schools, the initiative expanded ACEs and Positive Childhood Experiences (PACEs) training, school culture and climate coaching, and strategic planning based on Resilient School Survey results.
The project focuses on schoolwide resources such as reset spaces, CTE (Career & Technical Education) labs, and community partnerships to support student neurodevelopment and well-being. Using data-driven assessment tools, including mid-year student success surveys and faculty culture surveys, schools implement trauma-informed practices to enhance learning environments.
Key components of the initiative include:
✅ ACEs training for all staff (including teachers, bus drivers, and cafeteria workers)
✅ Resilient School Leadership Teams with student involvement
✅ Restorative discipline practices that address student behavior through support and
regulation
✅ Capacity-building institutes held biannually at ETSU
✅ Explicit teaching of school culture, core values, and regulation strategies
By embedding high-leverage trauma-informed practices, the Resilient Schools Project equips educators and students with the tools needed to create safe, supportive, and resilient learning environments that foster academic success and emotional well-being.
