East Tennessee State University offers accredited, affordable online programs with competitive tuition and fees. On this page you can find out more about our financial aid options, scholarships and other tuition discounts.
- Tuition: Fees and Discounts
You will automatically receive the eRate if you are not a TN resident, and are enrolled exclusively in online courses and/or programs. To qualify for the eRate, you must
- meet all ETSU admission requirements
- be verified as an online out-of-state student
You will not be eligible for any other scholarships or financial support directly from ETSU during any term where you receive the eRate. However, you may be eligible for federal financial aid.
Border County In-State Rate
If you live in select bordering counties in North Carolina and Virginia, you may attend ETSU at the in-state tuition rate.

A scholarship is a financial award given to a student based on factors such as academic achievement, selected major, hometown or financial need.
Financial need = Cost to Attend (budget) - Expected Family Contribution (EFC)
*EFC is calculated automatically when you fill out the (FAFSA)
- Scholarships do not have to be repaid.

Financial aid can help you pay for classes. The first step to getting financial aid is filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This information is used to determine whether you are eligible for federal grants, certain scholarships, and work-study programs.
