Eligibility
The McNair program is based on the premise that many undergraduate students possess the aptitude for advanced degrees. However, some promising students can be overlooked, especially those who are come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Therefore the McNair program seeks to bridge this gap between aptitude and access. In order to apply to the program you must:
- Be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
- Be enrolled as an undergraduate student in a major that is served by the program
- Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater (on a 4-point scale)
- Have successfully completed at least 60 semester course hours prior to the first day
of the first internship
- Have at least one semester left in your education AFTER completing the McNair Summer Internship
Express a sincere interest in doctoral study- Be EITHER a:
- First-generation college student (i.e., neither custodial parent(s)/guardian(s) graduated with a four year degree prior to your 18th birthday) with high financial need as established by the U.S. Department of Education current low-income levels
OR

- Member of an underrepresented group in graduate education
The successful applicant will also:
- Be willing to devote sufficient time to the McNair internship
- Possess emotional maturity and the ability to collaborate with others
- Be motivated to learn through creative and non-traditional modes
- Be open to self-reflection and guidance
