What are chromebooks?
A Chromebook is a device that is similar to a laptop, but uses Google’s Chrome operating system instead of Microsoft Windows or Apple MacOS. Chromebooks utilize web based software such as Google Apps instead of locally installed software on the device. -
Can I use a chromebook at ETSU?
Yes, you can use a chrombook at ETSU for things like checking emails, surfing the web, logging in to D2L to complete discussion boards, and many other tasks!
Keep in mind, though, if you need use 3rd-party software like Adobe products or LockDown Browser® you will need to use a Windows or MacOS device. That being said, ETSU does offer AppStream to students to help ensure access to needed software and resources. What is LockDown Browser®, and can I use it with my chromebook?
The Respondus Lockdown Browser® is an independent web browser that locks down the testing environment within D2L, and your instructor may require you to use it to take your exam. While taking a quiz using the Respondus Lockdown Browser you will not be able to print, copy, navigate to another URL, or access other applications. When you begin an assessment, you are locked into that quiz until you submit it for grading.
At this time, Lockdown Browser® is not compatible with chromebooks and any tests requiring it will need to be taken on a Windows or MacOS device. What are some advantages of a chromebook?
Chromebooks are an excellent alternative to a normal laptop. They provide fast access to email, docs, spreadsheets, slide presentations and web browsing. They are inexpensive, lightweight, have long battery life, and bootup in less than 10 seconds. They also do not require antivirus software, and your information is securely stored in the cloud. Any required updates are done at start up and are typically not noticeable. -
What are some disadvantages of a chromebook?
If your work requires any additional software to be loaded locally on the device such as AutoCad, Photoshop, etc., you would need a Windows or MacOS based device.
